The Bencao Gangmu is a 16th century treatise by pharmacologist Li Shizhen that contains a reference to the legendary mellified men. According to this account, some elderly men in Arabia would sacrifice themselves with the object of creating a healing substance. They would stop eating any food other than honey. They would also bathe in honey. Soon, their feces and even their sweat would turn into honey. But the diet was fatal. After their death, their bodies had to be placed in stone coffins also filled with honey. The process of mummification would last for nearly a hundred years, after which the contents of the coffin would have turned into a miraculous substance capable of curing severe ailments and sold in street markets at a hefty price.
